Benin, formerly Dahomey, is a country in West Africa with an area of ??112,622 square kilometers, and a population of 11884127 inhabitants, according to official estimates for 2019.
The country has many rivers, which at their estuaries form lagoons and swamps. The main ones are Niger (which forms the border with the state of Niger), Ueme, Koufo, Mono and the tributaries of Niger Sota, Mekrou and Alibori.
The name of the capital is Porto-Novo. Its currency is the West African CFA Franc. Most residents live in the south.
The name "Benin" is not exactly related to the Kingdom of Benin (or the City of Benin). The name Dachomei was changed (as inappropriate) in 1975
in the People's Republic of Benin and came from the body of water on which the African country is located. This name was chosen because of its neutrality, given the plethora of ethnic and linguistic groups in the state.
Dachomei was called the ancient kingdom of the Von.
The country occupies a small part of Guinea Africa that is bathed by the Gulf of Guinea, along the so-called Slave Coast, for about 120 kilometers. To the north it extends to Sudanese Africa.
The altitude of the country is almost the same everywhere. Most of the population lives on the south coast. In the north of the country there is a savannah (which is sometimes deforested by the natives to grow their crops) and plateaus.
Morphologically, the main soil divisions are related to a flat coastal strip, the northern reliefs and a central plateau.
The Weme River, 450 km long, flows from the south, while the country flows through the Niger River for about 150 km, as well as the Mono and Koufo rivers.
There are also lagoons in the state, which are closed by coastal rows. The largest lagoon is Nokue, which is connected by a canal to the ocean.
To the north are hilly formations followed by the Atacora Mountains.
The climate is humid and warm. The southern region has a subtropical climate with two dry seasons and two rainy seasons (April-July and September-November).
In the northern region the climate is tropical and there is only one period of rainfall. The drought season in the north lasts from October to April. In winter the nights can be colder, due to the harmatan winds. The amount of rainfall does not exceed 800 mm per year, with the exception of the reliefs and the Atacora Mountains, where rainfall of 1000 mm can be recorded.
In the southern lowlands one of the predominant plants is the palm oil. To the west of the Atacora Mountains is the National Park
of Penzari, where mammals live, characteristics of the savannah (buffalo, elephants, antelopes, lentils and many more.
as well as carnivores (lions, cheetahs, leopards).
